UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
The University of Maine System is comprised of seven universities and eleven regional outreach centers which are dedicated to academic excellence in areas important to Maine's growing high-tech, international economy, including computer sciences, mathematics, engineering, and international studies. Nearly 600 majors, minors and concentrations are available. In addition, 75 local ITV sites deliver distance-education programs. Advanced degree programs and graduate research opportunities are available at two of Maine’s public universities. The University of Maine offers master’s programs in over 60 areas of study and doctoral programs in 25 areas. The University of Southern Maine offers 27 advanced degrees in a wide range of fields.
COMMUNITY COLLEGES
The Maine Community College System is Maine's comprehensive two-year public college system, comprised of seven community colleges which train thousands of people each year for work in high-growth areas such as telecommunications, computers, and electronics, as well as traditional trades. They also provide no-cost, customized, pre-employment training. The System offers over 300 career and transfer programs, continuing education and customized training for business and industry. The seven Community Colleges are located in Auburn, Bangor, Fairfield, Presque Isle, South Portland, Calais, and Wells. Off-campus centers are located in East Millinocket, Ellsworth, South Paris, Caribou, Houlton, Dover-Foxcroft, and Bath. The Community Colleges serve over 10,000 students in degree programs, and another 10,000 in credit and noncredit courses and seminars.
PUBLIC AND PRIVATE COLLEGES
Maine Maritime Academy was rated by 2005 U.S News & World Report as one of America's best colleges for Engineering.
Numerous private colleges provide a diverse and demanding academic environment, rich in programs leading to advanced professional studies and careers in business management. Three of Maine's private colleges—Bates, Bowdoin, and Colby—are among the top-ranked private colleges in the nation.
